The Advanced Nanomaterials, Sensor and Environmental Research (ANSER) Laboratory

is a state-of-the-art research facility for nanomaterials synthesis, surface analysis, thin films, polymers, and sensor development. It supports the Institute of Chemistry’s ANSER program, which takes part in the enhancement of national scientific and engineering expertise on polymers, crystalline structures and nanomaterials.

The ANSER program was conceptualized and developed by the UP Diliman Institute of Chemistry (IChem), in collaboration with the University of Houston (UH) Departments of Chemistry and Chemical EngineeringThe laboratory is currently managed by IChem's Dr. Florian R. del Mundo, Dr. Florentino C. Sumera and Dr. Susan D. Arco. Dr. Rigoberto C. Advincula, Professor of Macromolecular Science and Engineering in Case Western Reserve University and Adjunct Professor in IChem, is the main collaborator at CWRU.

 

The ANSER Laboratory extends its support to other researchers of IC, other UP units, other universities, government agencies and private industries through research collaborations, contract research or service, training workshops and technical expertise consultancies.

The primary design of the ANSER Laboratory is one that caters to research projects that deal with some of today’s most popular interests in science and engineering.

Advanced Sensors Research

• The Development of Electrochemical SPR Sensing Using Electropolymerized Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) and Nanomaterials for Detecting EDCs and chemical contaminants

• Development of Quartz Crystal Microbalance and Fluorescence Sensing Methods for the Detection of Chemical Contaminants Based on MIPs and Nanomaterials

Biomedical and Drug Delivery Research

• Development of a Potential Drug Delivery Platform Based on Dendrimers

• Investigation of non-biofouling surfaces in medical devices

Environmental and Engineering Materials Research

• Syntheses of Hybrid Nanocomposites from Coconut Fatty Acid For Polymer and Environmental Use

• Nanostructured Ultrathin Films Based on Electrochemically Grafted Polymer Brushes

• Polymer Nanocomposites for Semiconductor Packaging Applications: Effect of Humidity and Temperature Cycling.

Alongside the well-equipped laboratory are the faculty members and students of UPD who are involved as leaders, collaborators, thesis students and research assistants in ANSER projects.

Housed in the ANSER Laboratory are cutting edge tools acquired through the financial support of the Department of Science and Technology to IChem’s ANSER projects.

• High-end electrochemistry equipment, capable of general techniques (linear sweep and cyclic voltammetry, pulse methods, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, chronoamperometry,

chronopotentiometry, electrochemical noise) and hyphenated methods.

• Surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy cluster, for nanostructured film characterization, real-time measurement of biomolecular interactions (binding selectivity, affinity and kinetics, active concentration, thermodynamics) and characterization of multilayers and layer by layer assemblies. A first in the Philippines.

• Multi-wavelength ellipsometer for characterization of material properties of thin films and real-time monitoring of interfacial behavior, film growth and film adsorption.

• Atomic force microscopy equipped with electrochemical cell for simultaneous use with potentiostat / galvanostat

• Multi-configured instrumentation for polymer materials and colloidal particles analysis made possible by hyphenated methods using the existing instruments in the ANSER Laboratory
