The IC is one of six degree-granting units of the UP College of Science and is designated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as a center of excellence in chemistry.
The IC started as the Department of Chemistry in 1910 and was eventually reorganized as an Institute in 1987. Today it is recognized as a leading institution of learning and research in chemistry in the country. With the completion of two new buildings within the Science Complex, the IC continues its commitment to education, research, and extension services and in producing the finest graduates in chemistry. Proposed New Buildings of the Institute of Chemistry The New IC Research building undergoing constructionUpdate on IC New Buildings The implementation of Phase 1 of the construction of the research building and part of the teaching building of IC has been underway since last May 2008. Construction of the research building is expected to finish by December 2009. Phase 2 of the project for the completion of the construction of the teaching building starts January 2010 and ends January 2011. The Project Team led by IC and Architect Lisa Santos ensures that buildings construction are completed on schedule and within budget by holding weekly site coordination meetings with the building construction management and contractor and representatives of the UP Office of the Campus Architect . The Institute of Chemistry is celebrating its 100 years of excellence in chemistry and chemical education this 2010. The first chemistry department was housed in a building in Padre Faura St.(where the UP College of Dentistry is now) in 1910. A four-year course was then instituted for the BS Chemistry degree. And now, after 100 years IC will have two new buildings located at the National Science Complex, UP Diliman. IC starts its year long centennial celebration with the following calendar of activities: January February First Aid Training to be conducted by KAMPO UNO, February 13, 2010 KKP-DAS 1st Graduate Research Seminar February 15, 2010, UP-Ayala Technohub Conference Room Fire Safety to be conducted by Quezon City Fire Department, February 27, 2010 IC Centennial Memorabilia Sale March May June December |

For more details click here The Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas - Division of Analytical Sciences (KKP-DAS) is inviting research paper contributions from graduate students of chemistry and allied fields (chemical engineering, environmental science and/or engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, materials engineering, etc.) for its first Graduate Research Symposium on February 15, 2010. The symposium will be a venue for young and promising researchers to present and share their scientific investigations in the field of analytical sciences. This is the first ever gathering of graduate students from the various universities and colleges in the country. |

The Institute of Chemistry is this year’s beneficiary of Merck Philippines Inc. “Ligtas Eskwela” program. In this connection, there will be a Safety Seminar for all students on December 7, 2009 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the CS Auditorium. All BS Chemistry students are required to attend this seminar. Graduate students are welcome to attend. Some surprises await the participants and a certificate of attendance will also be given. UP-Institute of Chemistry : Consistent Top Performing School in the Chemistry Board Exam The UPIC-Diliman again showed its position this year as one of the top performing school in the 2009 Chemistry Board Exam. It consistently produces the greatest number of licensed chemists nationwide yearly in addition to placing many of its graduates in the top ten. Two of our promising Ph.D. students in chemistry Mr.Allan Christopher Yago and Mr. Ian Harvey Arellano were selected as the country’s representatives to the 2nd HOPE Meeting which will be held on September 27 to October 2, 2009 in Hagone,Kaganawa Prefecture Japan. The meeting will be chaired by Dr. Ryoji Noyori who won the 2001 Nobel prize in Chemistry. |
